for stockNot adding salt and other seasoning actually saves time and money while doing a cleanse.  I make  some chicken broth for cooking from an organic chicken carcass in several steps:

  1. Cook it without salt and cut the meat off.
  2. Place the meat with some onion, celery, carrot and ginger root and lemon peels if handy with 4 quarts filtered or bottled water- enough to cover the meat. If you don’t use lemon, add a couple of tablespoons of vinegar to the water.
  3. Bring this to a boil, then simmer  the broth for 24 hours so there is really rich flavor to it. I leave a cover on it so it doesn’t simmer away and keep it over  just enough heat to get some small bubbling action.Try to keep it at least 6 hours on the stove but 24 is great.
  4. Strain immediately when done and then let cool. Pour into jars and ice cube trays. I reserve the cubes in a bag in the freezer and add them to cook meat .

Eating processed food can really add a lot of sodium to you diet. You may see fiber rich crackers or breads but they contain a lot of sodium. Salt will retain fluid and retard the cleansing action you want Some salt is so refined it is even toxic to you.

When you do use salt, use good quality sea salt. Some types I know are Lima and  SI salt. Let me know of brands and types you like.

To juice or not to juice

by Susan Collinson

Juicing has been popular for cleansing for some time. I know that there are a lot of juice fasts out there.  Juices may make a nice addition to your cleanse but they do not alone achieve what you want to accomplish.

One of  physiological goals for your cleanse is  to lower insulin levels. Juicing alone can cause unstable blood sugar levels and increase insulin levels. This can lead to stress on glands like adrenals and the pancreas. You need protein and fiber to help the liver detoxify.

Another thing is that you want to maintain the weight loss from the cleanse and build better eating habits.  Juicing exclusively may cause many cravings and actually lead to weight gain following your cleanse.

All that being said, we know that juicing can be delicious and a good way to combine fruits and veggies.  Watermelon juice is a good way to finish off  a large melon in the summer – you don’t even need a juicer for that- just blend it and drink – very good addition to your cleanse.

Cucumber juice is good for digestion and another good addition.

Wheat grass is another popular juice product. Be careful with your juicer as it can clog the juicer- best to get that one at the health food store.  Mix with apple and lemon and it tastes great!

What type of juicer is best- one that cleans easily and you must clean it right away. That right there is a drawback to juicing! I have a Champion Juicer. I like it but it has many parts that need to be washed  and can be  tiresome. The parts come off easily and they are easy to clean. It also makes solids dishes like sorbet .  Share info on a juicer you like – I would love to know more.

So be smart and get a cleansing diet going that includes some juice but remains more balanced.  My next post will be around best foods for cleansing.

This audio file give you some ideas for exercise during the cleanse.  I am hoping that you already have an exercise routine that you follow. If you don’t, there are suggestions for you to try walking and building it up gradually.  Do not push yourself during this time as you will need your stamina to focus on the cleanse- changing habits takes time and fortitude. and you can’t do it all in 3 weeks.

Just like your diet , I am hoping that you will plan ahead to building new skills for a healthier exercise lifestyle after your cleanse. Take the time now to assess your exercise program for the future.
